Tandem Riding 101
The job of a tandem team captain is to make sure the stoker (fancy bike language for the one who rides in the back) is on board and ready to ride, to steer the bicycle safely from point A to point B, and to communicate critical information such as upcoming bumps, pot holes or quick stops (because the captain is completely in charge of the brakes). The tandem captain is also responsible for shifting gears when necessary and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS letting the stoker know what is going on. The captain must listen to and earn the trust of the stoker.
Your role as a leader is similar. You have to make sure everyone is on board, “steer” the organization in the right direction, and communicate critical information to your team. To be effective, you must earn the trust and respect of your team. You know all too well what this feels like.
But do you remember how it felt to be led, instead of being the one doing the leading? Are you able to communicate with your team in a way that they can hear and understand?
The livelihood of your staff is in your hands, and they must trust you enough to speak up when they are in the unique position to share something with you that you might not be able to see for yourself.
Like the tandem stoker with no steering mechanism, your team can help choose the destination, plan the route and share their thoughts, opinions and feedback, but they are not the “driver.”
We invite you to rediscover what it feels like to be led instead of doing the leading by taking a ride on the back seat of a tandem recumbent bicycle. You’ll spend an hour riding with Marci as your captain.
This power hour is followed by a delicious lunch (or late breakfast) at a local restaurant where you’ll be joined by Pam to debrief your experience and examine how it applies to your unique leadership style.
You’ll ride away re-innergized(sm) and with a renewed understanding of your responsibilities as a leader and what it takes to lead with heart.
We will provide the bicycle, helmet, gloves, snacks, water, sports drinks, your meal and an experience you won’t soon forget. You provide pedal power and a willingness to learn in a whole new way!
